Sheila Jackson Lee: Healthcare, Education a Constitutional Right

8 May

From Real Clear Politics:

REP. SHEILA JACKSON LEE (D-TEXAS): I was very pleased to stand with my fellow Democrats and support the Affordable Care Act. I could go through the journey of 2009 and 2010, when many of us spread out across the country and confronted misinformation through town hall meetings, controversy and conflictedness.

And what should be emphasized as the president’s leadership on one single point that although health care was not listed, per se, in the constitution, it should be a constitutional right. And if you read the words or quote the words of the Declaration of Independence, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that we have certain inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’ One might argue that education and health care fall into those provisions of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. (House Floor, May 6, 2013)

Funny how Democrats see things that are not in our Constitution, while at the same time ignoring other things that are clearly written, like the 2nd Amendment, for example.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

—Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Atheists Win Right to Pass Out Literature at Florida High Schools

1 May

From The Washington Times:

If the Christians get to do it, then so should we. That was the winning argument of atheists who fought for access to several Florida high schools to distribute group documents — same as evangelicals did with Bibles in January.

“We want to close the door to religion in schools, not open it to Freethought,” said David Williamson, an organizer with the Central Florida Freethought Community, the Orlando Sentinel reported. “[But] if they’re going to have a religious discussion on campus, we need to be a part of it.”

The principals of several schools told the Orlando Sentinel that they were forced to allow the atheist groups to distribute materials on campus, or they would be sued. The schools’ legal counsel said in a letter that the Freedom From Religion Foundation had joined Mr. Williamson’s group in threatening a suit for equal access.

Adding fuel to the legal fire: The Bible distributions in January stemmed from a threat of a lawsuit, too. The Orlando Sentinel reported that World Changers of Florida, a group that promotes more religion in schools, warned it would sue unless its members were allowed to place Bibles on a table in a public place for students to take. The atheists have to follow the same rules — no interaction with students, the newspaper reported.

Preschooler’s Homemade Lunch Replaced with “Healthy” Alternative by State Agent

15 Feb

This makes total sense.  After all, why should parents have a say in what their children eat?!

A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because a state employee told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day.

Obviously, the mother was not too happy:

“I don’t feel that I should pay for a cafeteria lunch when I provide lunch for her from home…”

“…What got me so mad is, number one, don’t tell my kid I’m not packing her lunch box properly….I pack her lunchbox according to what she eats. It always consists of a fruit. It never consists of a vegetable. She eats vegetables at home because I have to watch her because she doesn’t really care for vegetables….”

“…She came home with her whole sandwich I had packed, because she chose to eat the nuggets on the lunch tray, because they put it in front of her… You’re telling a 4-year-old. ‘oh. your lunch isn’t right,’ and she’s thinking there’s something wrong with her food.”

So nice to the mommy and daddy government taking care of us all.

Joe Biden’s Propaganda to School Children

24 Oct

This really made me sick to my stomach.  To hear the Vice President of the United States talking this nonsense to impressionable young children is appalling.  It’s bad enough to see Democrats use class warfare with uninformed adults, but to see it done with small children is really disturbing.

“We can affect who they will be forever”

21 Oct

On October 17, Michelle Obama was speaking on the South Lawn of the White House at a reception to honor schools that met the goals of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC).  In her speech, she said: (emphasis mine)

“When many kids spend half of their waking hours and get up to half their daily calories at school, you know that with the food you serve and, more importantly, the lessons you teach that you’re not just shaping their habits and preferences today, you’re affecting the choices they’re going to make for the rest of their lives. That’s why we start with kids, right?  We can affect who they will be forever.”

Yep, taking a look at the OWS protesters gives us all a good look at what happens when we let liberals get ahold of our children at schools and “affect who they will be forever.”

Government and liberal educators are the last people I want influencing and shaping my child.

Republicans to Save DC Voucher Program for Low-Income Children Killed by Obama

9 Mar

Remember when Obama killed the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, “a school-voucher program authorized by Congress in 2004. The program gives students up to $7,500 to attend whatever school their parents choose.  The DC voucher program is a way out of one of the worst school districts in the country.”  The picture above is of “at least 1,300 school kids and several hundred adults (many of them single parents who had to get off work) gathered at Freedom Plaza to rally for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program in Washington.”  Notice anything in particular about the kids in the picture?  The thought of “what would the reaction be if a Republican was doing this to these particular kids” comes to mind.

Now there’s Hope…from Republicans for these low-income students in Washington D.C.  “The office of Speaker John Boehner reminds us that the budget passed by House GOP will restore the program in the SOAR ACT.”

“When Barack Obama took office on the mantle of Hope and Change, one of the first moves he and his Democratic allies in Congress made was to shut down the DC Opportunity Scholarship Programs to new students.  Despite a track record of sterling success in moving children in low-income families from failing public schools and giving them a chance at academic success — and a brighter future — Democrats cut funding to the DCOSP and consigned the children of the District of Columbia to the public-school monopoly.”

I’m sure that Obama’s reason for killing the program for low-income students had nothing to do with his political connections to teachers’s unions, particularly the National Education Association (NEA).  “In a March 6, 2009 letter to Obama, the NEA president Dennis Van Roekel called the D.C. program “an ongoing threat to public education in the District of Columbia” and urged Obama to “use your voice to help eliminate this threat” by opposing “any efforts to extend this ineffective program.”

I’d like to know where Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the Congressional Black Caucus and Democrats are on this issue? Where is the “mainstream” media?  Why aren’t they defending these children?  Just goes to show, once again, that these people are not interested in helping the people they claim to defend.  If the cause is not a liberal cause, they have no interest, even though the majority of these children are black.

This video shows black kids and their parents in D.C. asking “why?”

Education For Sale!

23 Mar

Chicago Breaking News reported late last night that former Chicago schools chief and current Secretary of Education Arne Duncan manipulated a system to favor powerful political allies by placing their children in the schools of their choice.  The discovery of a  list, the existence of which had been long denied by the city, and its composition of mainly high-powered political figures calls into question the appeals system used to reconsider applications that had been denied by the top Chicago-area schools.”

According to the story, “the list surfaced amid a federal probe and an internal investigation into admissions practices at the city’s top high schools. Until Monday, the district had not revealed it had kept such a list.”

The list was maintained by a top Duncan aide, David Pickens, currently chief of staff to the president of the Chicago Board of Education.

So, here we have the United States Secretary of Education, appointed by Obama, manipulating a system so that the children of powerful political allies get to go to the best schools in the city, while children of the common-folk get to go to lesser schools.

Hope and Change?
