Black student sees Confederate Flag as a symbol of pride, not racism. Byron Thomas, 19, is a student at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. He was asked by university officials in late November to take the down flag after students and parents complained. They have since told him he can put it back up.
“When I look at this flag, I don’t see racism. I see respect, Southern pride”
What if Byron Thomas sees the flag and it reminds him of how far our country has come in matters of race? We still have a long way to go, but I’d argue that the people complaining about the flag being displayed are just as much of a hindrance to that being achieved as anyone else. It seems as though we have a large segment of our population that is just waiting to be offended.
It says a lot about someone like Byron Thomas that he has such an open mind and courage at such a young age. I guess that the people who don’t want him to be allowed to display the Confederate Flag would rather keep thinking about how guilty our country is for the sin of slavery, instead of being proud that be abolished it.
